Chico State’s New Science Building by SmithGroup & DPR

One of my favorite projects of 2021, we had a fun time shooting Chico State’s Siskiyou II Science Building with SmithGroup & DPR. The combination of a great team, a project that supports diversity, equity and inclusion, STEM and awesome image opportunities created the perfect formula for fulfilling work.

Recognized for Excellence in Planning on an Existing Campus, this science building is an amazing addition to Chico State’s beautiful grounds. Integrating modern design into the historic campus, this building seamlessly ties together distinctly disparate parts of the campus.

With SmithGroup’s support, Chico State has used this project to extend its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The building is home to the STEM Connection Collaborative Program (CSC²). With the goal of recruiting and retaining students from diverse and under-represented backgrounds in STEM, CSC² will use the new science facility to support student success.

The building will feature celebrations of local indigenous tribes with recognition of sacred lands and the sustainable legacy of the Mechoopda tribe – on which the new building is rooted. Notable alumni of diverse backgrounds will be honored on various floors of the building. Also included in the building program are common spaces providing support for students and neighboring communities as well as non-binary bathrooms.
